RELICS is a collection of Victor Agius’ most recent abstracted landscapes. In these works Agius uses the landscape as an excuse to lurk into abstract compositions. He gives a personal interpretation to what are otherwise familiar Maltese scenes. Agius perceives his natural surroundings and heritage sites as jewels and thus he uses his panels and palette to conserve them and thus create relics. The concept behind this personal exhibition is to display to the general public a collection Agius' sculptural creations, all of which are volume consumers. The last time Agius exhibited sculptures was in 2005 with an exhibition entitled ‘Nativitas’ in which the artist restrained himself both to the media and theme used in the works. On the 14th of January, the Maltese artist Victor Agius was awarded a prize entitled ‘Il Giglio di Firenze’ in Florence, Italy. The artist was chosen from amongst other Maltese artists to stand for Maltese art in an event organized by the Florentine entrepreneur Niccolo Ricci to promote Malta in Italy. This event had as its aim the collection of funds in aid of the San Giovanni Battista Hospital in Rome, which hospital is run by the Order of Malta. As the theme for his second one-man exhibition, Victor Agius is focusing on Christ’s nativity which occupies such a fond place in his heart and in that of all authentic Christians. The collection is divided between paintings and ceramics. In this exhibition the artist is presenting a number of works which are a manifesto of the island of Gozo. Various sites and views with which the artist, being an islander, is surrounded inspire all his thirteen works. Many times these are taken for granted but to him they were a source of inspiration.
